HMGB1是一種核蛋白，其由壞死細胞被動釋放，由凋亡細胞保留，并由炎癥細胞主動分泌（Dumitriu等人，HMGB1:從內部引導免疫。Trends Immunol 2005，26:381-7）。HMGB1對生命至關重要：HMGB1基因敲除小鼠出生后不久死亡。

二硫化物HMGB1可誘導單核細胞和其他炎癥細胞產生細胞因子和趨化因子（Venereau等人，2012）。
